One person died on the spot and four others sustained injuries after a bus they were travelling in was on Wednesday night involved in a road crash on Gulu-Kampala highway.
The deceased and the injured were travelling in a bus belonging to Makome Bus Company Reg. No. UAR 339M to Kampala when it knocked a stationary truck, at around 1:45 am, about 2 kms to Kiryandongo district headquarters. The deceased has been identified as George Amolo, a resident of Atiak Sub County, Amuru district while the four injured were yet to be identified.
Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the the road crash, adding that the bus has since been impounded by the police to help with the investigation.
Reckless driving accounted for 76 percent of deaths recorded on the roads across the country in 2021, according to police latest figures. Out of the 3,757 Ugandans who perished in road crashes last year, 2,644 were blamed of reckless driving.
Reckless driving was also blamed for 7,071 serious road crashes that same year. In total, reckless driving caused 13,174 road crashes last year.
